Spiti strikes a perfect balance between cold mountain desert and occasional green patches full of life. The valley showcases one of the most dynamic sets of conditions that burst our bubble of being mightier than nature- something that travellers find very intriguing.
Home to a number of significant villages like Tabo, Kibber, and Rakchham, Spiti has plenty of pretty sights consisting of monasteries, cherry blossoms, snow-covered villages, and the general charm that lingers on this blessed land.
About 19 km from Spiti, the Langza village is famous for the presence of marine fossils, buried deep under layers of sedimentary rocks. Millions of years later, they narrate the story of the entire region possibly being underwater and the aquatic animals that swam here freely once.
Spiti Valley hosts the worldâs highest post office in the village of Hikkim, at an elevation of 15,500 feet above sea level. Despite the harsh weather conditions and little to no connectivity to the outside world, Spiti manages to make things a little easier for its locals residents and travellers who send postcards as souvenirs.
The Shimla to Kaza highway is one of the worldâs most treacherous roads to travel upon. Kibber is an ancient settlement in the Spiti valley, sitting proudly at an altitude of 4720 m. Apart from heavy snowfall that covers the entire village with a thick blanket of snow, Kibber is also home to the wild ghost cat or Snow Leopard. While youâre lurking in the wilderness here, you might just spot one, if you try long enough!
