Distinctively known for its bluish-green tint because of the presence of extensive greenery shadowed by the Nilgiri mountain range, Ooty is the picture-perfect example of surprises that Tamil Nadu has in store for travel enthusiasts. The town gives off a faint scent of tea leaves freshly cut from the plantations, all thanks to the tea factories here. Further, imagine walking in the largest rose garden India, covered by mist and an occasional whiff of tea leaves. Sounds quite like an experience in itself.

The Nilgiris can pretty much make any onlooker fall in love with them. The one-of-a-kind blue mountain range is the sole contributor to Ooty’s distinctive landscape. Simply sitting and taking in the fresh air as you marvel at the view is a soul-stirring experience here.

Ooty pretty much prospers with wildlife unique to its regions such as gaur, Indian bison, mountain tigers and more. Since a vast area is covered by thick forests, their habitat stays safe. So, be prepared to spot a wild animal or 2 while you hike through these lands.

Ooty is an underrated haven for tea lovers. A wide variety of ‘chai’ ranging from black, green, and white are available here. Tea fanatic or not, the scent of it lingering in the air is sure pleasant. 

Fun Facts

Ooty was originally formed as a House of Invalids. The British Raj didn’t want Nilgiril to become home to its opponents, so the soldiers set foot to explore the mountains. After losing many men during exploration, they realized that the area is a perfect hideout. And the weather conditions favoured them.

Ooty is the birthplace of snooker! Yes, you read that right. Billiards was invented over a century ago at the Ootacamund Club by the Britishers! 

Ooty happens to have the steepest railway line in Asia. The steep slopes of the Nilgiris were tricky to build railway tracks on. But considering trains were needed for the economy of the town, they were built anyway.
