Back in Time
Born in the 1800s, Mussoorieâs first official resident was a British captain and his family, who found refuge in the mountains away from wars and enemy hostility.
Mussoorie derives its name from âMansoorâ, a type of lentil shrub which is local to the area. That is why a lot of locals still refer to it as âMansooriâ.
Sir George Everest, after whom Mount Everest is named, was one of the residents of this town. He also set up his observatory around the present-day George Everest Peak and studied celestial bodies from there!
