About Kochi

About

Amongst other adventures, Cochin prominently offers a culture perfectly preserved over the 900 years of foreign rule. The city’s streets stay splashed with contemporary graffiti and an array of vogue art cafes feed you delicious food while satisfying your artsy side. These and other surprises await you as you make way to Kerala’s coastal city, Kochi. With three main cultural centers of Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam holding wonders for travellers to explore, the city goes much deeper with its small villages and gullies that surround the popular hubs.

Why we love Kochi

Introducing our taste buds to the fine Kerala seafood, the cafes and restaurants of Kochi are best to try out popular dishes like fish curry, parotta with buff roast, Keralan stew, and toddy, a local dink.

The art scene of Kochi is commendable. Its streets are painted with vibrant graffiti and its cafes hold art elements made by artists from all over the world. Art lovers should visit during the 3-month run of the Kochi Muziris Biennale, a popular art festival across the world.

The narrow lanes of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are best traversed on foot, thanks to their proximity to each other and the hostel! When here, spare a day or two just to explore the city’s monuments and food.

Fun Facts

As one of the world’s major trading ports back in the 1400s to 1600s, Kochi was ruled over by the Portuguese, Dutch, the Kingdom of Mysuru, and finally, the Britishers!

Pepper is used as a legit currency at the International Pepper Exchange of Kochi. You can buy and trade other spices and items on barter at this marketplace dedicated to pepper.

Swarming with monuments from different centuries that follow different architecture, Kochi is a curious blend of more than 4 distinctive cultures, making it a truly unique city.

Back in Time

Cochin was born in the 1100s, once it separated from the kingdom of Kurukshetra. However, for the next 9 centuries, Kochi would be ruled by countries from afar!

Finding out about the pure spices and port-qualities of Kochi, Italians took over the city in the 1400s. In the 1500s, Portuguese took their turn to rule on Cochin, and then in the 1600s, they had to hand the city over to the Dutch.

Kochi became the tradepost of Kerala in the 1300s. This happened because of the floods that took over the State back then, destroying the former trade capital of Periyar.
