About Dalhousie

About

One of the most well-planned hill stations in the North, Dalhousie houses colonial-era architectural marvels jacketed by lush green mountainscapes. Moreover, the snow-capped Himalayas complementing the old world charm of the ancient architecture provide a perfect backdrop for a vacation. To travellers, Dalhousie meets with umpteen treks and trails to follow, opening avenues to fetch great views and explore its history.

Why we Love Dalhousie

The hikes and treks of Dalhousie are some of the most rewarding and versatile. Khajjiar, Kalatop wildlife reserve, Dainkund peak, Ganji Pahari, and many more such trails here are as unique as their names and take you through intriguing landscapes and towards beautiful views.

The small hill town of Khajjiar is often referred to as mini-Switzerland for all the right reasons. Surrounded by thick blankets of deodar and pine forests and the Khajjiar lake, a day out in the meadows here cannot be avoided, with the added benefit of hiking of course.

This is how Dalhousie works for a traveller: the further away you are from the ground, the closer you get to the rawness of nature. Gorgeous sunrise and sunset views from mountain tops and viewpoints only add more charm to Himachal’s northern town.

Fun facts

Dalhousie has been home to a number of prominent personalities throughout history. Writers and artists like Rabindranath Tagore, Rudyard Kipling, amongst others were intrigued by its serenity and stayed here for long periods of time.

Although belonging to India, Dalhousie has played a major role in the history of China as well. When China took over Tibet, Dalhousie served as a base camp for thousands of Tibetan refugees. To this date, Dalhousie shows glimpses of Tibetan culture, amalgamated with its own.

While we have a lot to hate the British Raj for, they helped us find some of the best-hidden getaways for a quick rejuvenation, and Dalhousie is one of them. Founded by a British governor Lord Dalhousie, this town was his summer retreat and his impeccable gift to India.
