How to Reach Harabhag
We hopped on a bus from Kashmiri Gate, Delhi, directly to Joginder Nagar. From there, Harabhag was just a short 10-15 minute cab drive away. Lucky for us, Zostel Homes Harabhag sits right beside the Mandi-Pathankot Road.
Yup, which means you can catch a local bus to Bir or Barot right from the doorstep!

Note: Local buses run through Joginder Nagar throughout the day.
Best Time to Visit Harabhag
If you must know, I visited Harabhag in March. It was a bit chilly, especially at night. But in the afternoon, it was quite sunny.
All in all, though, Harabhag is a great place to visit year-round, but the experience varies with the seasons.
- Summer (MarchâJune): Harabhag will help you beat the heat, as it stays cool and breezy. If you love pleasant weather and blooming landscapes, this is the best time to visit Harabhag.
- Monsoon (JulyâSeptember): If you donât mind a little rain, this is when Harabhag is at its most vibrant. Misty mornings, dramatic clouds, and waterfalls in full flowâitâs all very dreamy!
- Winter (OctoberâFebruary): Expect crisp air, clear skies, and chilly weather with occasional frost. The real treat? Stunning snow-covered peaks in the backdrop, making the views breathtaking.

- Catch a Life-altering Sunset
Trust me, youâve never seen a sunset like the one in Harabhag. As the sun sinks behind the mountains, the sky explodes into shades of orange, pink, and purpleâlike natureâs masterpiece. The whole place glows, and for a moment, everything feels surreal. Itâs the kind of view that fills up your camera roll, makes it straight to your Instagram story, and maybe even brings out the poet in you.

- Hike to Shanan Power House
Distance from Harabhag: ~4 km, 30-40 min
This hike is shortâor, as my friend would say, âeasy, peasy, lemon squeezy.â Honestly, itâs more of a breezy stroll, with a scenic road, a quiet forest on one side, and some charming old government residences along the way. Add in the sound of birds, some tiny shops, and locals who are used to seeing strangers with curious gazes walk by, and itâs pretty much the perfect little escape.
History time! The Shanan Power House is part of the Hydel Electric Project that came into being under Raja Joginder Sen Bahadur, the king of Mandi, in 1952. Fun fact: this project actually comes under the State of Punjab and not Himachal Pradesh.
Oh, and we started this hike right from the backyard of Zostel Homes Harabhag.

- Drop by Machiyal Lake
Distance from Harabhag: ~12 km, 30 min
This is probably one of the lesser-known spots near Harabhag. According to local legends, the lake is believed to be sacred and is said to be named after the Fish God. Its calm waters and peaceful surroundings make it a perfect spot for a quiet picnic if that is something you enjoy.
Bonus: Yup, there are actual fish in this lake. But fishing is strictly prohibited.
Remember to respect local sentiments and to keep the area clean.
- Hike to Mata Maheswari Temple
Distance from Harabhag: ~18 km, 35 min
Looking for a sunset hike? This is the one. A short, scenic trail through lush greenery leads you up to something pretty special. When we visited the temple, a group of locals was setting up for the evening prayerâmusical instruments and allâadding to the whole vibe. And once you reach the very top, get ready for a view trifecta. One side glows with the warmest sunset hues, the other shows off the snow-covered Himalayas, and right below, beautiful Bir stretches out like a painting.
- Visit Baijnath
Distance from Harabhag: ~26 km, 50 min
If you're in Kangra, you have to stop by Baijnathâitâs practically a rule. We realised this the moment we arrived at the temple, greeted by a mix of locals and travellers, all drawn to this ancient spot. More than just a revered pilgrimage site, this 13th-century Nagara-style temple is an architectural stunner. And with the Dhauladhar range as its backdrop, the whole scene feels straight out of a postcard.
- Head to Bir
Distance from Harabhag: ~19 km, 30 min
Of course, when youâre just a quick 30-min drive away from Bir, the paragliding capital of India, dropping by is a no-brainer. Bir is a one-of-a-kind spot. Every time you visit, youâll discover a whole new side of it. With endless cafes, fascinating monasteries, quirky souvenir shops, and people flying like birds in the backdrop, Bir is for every kind of traveller. And if you're making your next Bir trip itinerary, consider adding Harabhag to it!

Winch Camp Trek - One of the Lesser-known Treks in Himachal Pradesh
The Winch Camp Trek is, hands down, one of the most underrated treks in Himachal. Never heard of it? Youâre not alone.
What makes this trek so unique is that the entire trail follows an actual haulage trolley track from the British eraâand itâs still operational! (Though, if you want to hop on, youâll need special permissions.)
Also, you will pass through the Jhimjhima forest, unexplored meadows, and many mini-stations for a quick break. Up at the top, Winch Camp offers a panoramic view of the valley, making it a perfect spot for camping. See it for yourself here!

Trek Routes
There are multiple routes, and one of them kicks off from Brijmandiâjust a short bus ride from Joginder Nagar. (And if youâre staying at Zostel Homes Harabhag, catching the bus is quick & easy!) From there, find the track and start climbing. Fair warning: itâs going to be a serious cardio session.
Pro tip: If youâre up for a real challenge, take the Khooni Ghati routeâwhere the 70-degree slopes will have you questioning all your life choices.
Or, if youâd rather keep your knees intact, thereâs an easier, less steep path. (Just ask the localsâtheyâll point you in the right direction.)
Trek Details
Difficulty: Moderately difficult. It has sharp inclines and descents, so trekkers are advised to be careful.
Distance: 5-6 km - From Brijmandi to Winch Camp
You can also go all the way to Barot. For that, youâll have to trek further ~3 km towards Head Gear Station. A diversion in the middle will take you to Barot Village.
Note: Do ask the locals for directions!
