Best time to visit Meghalaya

The best time to visit Meghalaya, the abode of clouds, is between October and June. During this time period, the temperature in most of the state remains around 30 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time to go out and explore. The autumn and winter seasons are also a great time to visit Meghalaya, i.e. from October to November and December to February. Being the wettest place on earth, exploring Meghalaya in the monsoon is not recommended. However, the waterfalls and lakes of Meghalaya are at their best soon after the rainy season.

How to reach Shillong

By Air

The capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong, has an airport but it is connected only to Kolkata. However, the nearest airport that connects the state is Guwahati, which is around 115 km from the city. Car rentals and taxis are easily available from here.

• Taxi from Guwahati airport to Shillong: INR 2200-3000

By Road

The roads of Shillong are one of the finest in the country and well-connected to the neighbouring states. You can easily drive down to Shillong from Guwahati, which is the easiest route to take.

By Rail

The nearest and most active railhead to Shillong is Guwahati Railway Station, which is around 100 km from the city. You can get private taxis or shared jeeps to Shillong from here.

By Bus

State and private-run buses are available from ASTC Bus Stand, right outside the Guwahati Railway Station. Regular buses also ply from ISBT Beltola in Guwahati.

Moving around Meghalaya

To move around Meghalaya, you can rent a car/bike/scooty from Guwahati or Shillong. However, local buses and yellow taxis are also available to various locations in Meghalaya. The main taxi stand of Shillong is in Police Bazar, which is only 25-mins from Zostel Shillong.

Local food scene of Meghalaya

One of the best ways to experience a new culture is through its food. Meghalaya, in particular, offers a unique and flavorful gastronomical adventure through its local cuisine. Here are some dishes you should try during your visit to this stunning state:

Jingbam Dihsha- The traditional Khasi cuisine comprises a range of snacks that are best served with red tea. These include:

• Ja Shulia or sticky rice
• Pu Sla or rice cake in a leaf
• Pu Doh or steamed rice cake with pork strips
• Pu Maloi or steamed rice cake
• Pu Khelin or fried rice

Phan and Tungtap- A spicy treat made using fermented dry fish chutney with boiled potatoes. The ingredients of the chutney are charred dry fish, onion, red chillies, and dry chilli.

Wak Tangsek Pura- A Garo dish made using pork and green vegetables with powdered rice and indigenous soda.

Jadoh, Dohkhlieh and Tungrymbai- Jadoh, made with pork and rice, is accompanied by Dohkhlieh, pork salad, and Tungrymbai, cooked fermented soybeans and black sesame seeds.

Doh Sain or Doh Sniang Nei-Iong- A Pnar dish, this dish is made by cooking pork with black sesame seeds and served with steamed rice.

Ktung Bain Nei-Iong- A dish made by cooking dry fish and black sesame seeds.

Dakharang or Kharang- A popular smoked fish delicacy among the Jaintias, it is served as a curry, salad, or chutney.

Do∙o Kapa- A beloved Garo delicacy, it is made by cooking chicken with indigenous soda, fresh herbs, and chillies.

Me∙kin/Sobok Chatni- A popular side dish to most Garo fare, this chutney is made with banana flowers.

Na∙kam Bitchi- It is a spicy dry-fish gravy enjoyed by the Garos and is served with steamed rice.

Ja Tyndong- Cooking in bamboo tubes is commonly carried out by farmers. In this process, rice, vegetables, fish, and meat are inserted in the bamboo tube with water and spices, which are then sealed using banana leaves. It is then baked till the bamboo is charred from the outside.

Putharo and Doh Jem- Putharo, a fluffy flatbread made using rice flour, is served with Doh Jem, a pork curry. This dish is usually served with tea.

Local Culture, Festivals, and Music

Meghalaya is home to diverse tribes with rich agrarian and tribal traditions. The state boasts a wealth of traditional arts and crafts, such as basket weaving, bamboo and cane product making (including hats, mats, combs, chairs, and utensils), and wood carving. Additionally, certain communities in Meghalaya use bamboo in their cooking.

Behdeinkhlam Festival- Celebrated by the Pnars, this festival can be experienced in Jowai and Tuberkmai. Aimed at driving away evil spirits, this festival is celebrated with a resounding fervour and continues for a few days until the final procession. Falling in the monsoon month, the festival also involves fun traditional games.

Shad Suk Mynsiem Festival- One of the biggest Khasi festivals, taking place in April, it is the celebration of spring’s arrival. The festival is characterised by special dance and music, traditional apparel, and symbolic rituals.

Wangala Festival- The harvest festival of the Garos, it is characterised by symbols, rituals, ceremonial dances, and drums and is celebrated between September and November.

With respect to music, Meghalaya is famed for possessing strong musical roots and a plentitude of musical virtuosity. The capital, Shillong, is popularly titled the Rock Capital of India. In an endeavour to boost indigenous talent, the state government launched the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project in 2022.
