Tabo, housing a 1000-year-old monastery, and Dhankar, the erstwhile capital of Spiti housing a fortress, are epitome to the rich history prevailing in the valley. The lake at Dhankar adds to the aura of the valley. Clear blue skies and snow capped peaks add to the colours one can expect here. The exploratory walk to the monasteries in Tabo and Dhankar shall be a journey in understanding the Tibetan influence across the valley while the hike to Dhankar lake can add some adventure to our journey.
We start from Zostel Kaza at 11 in the morning towards Tabo which is a 2 hour journey.
Reaching Tabo, we explore the monastery which houses the centuries old and new gompas and get to know and understand from the monks about the monastery and its history.
We have our lunch trying out the local cuisine and leave for Dhankar.
On reaching Dhankar, we explore the famous Dhankar monastery and Dhankar Fort, situated at an altitude of approximately 3900 meters.
Around 5 in the evening, we start our one hour hike towards Dhankar Lake.
After spending sometime, we get back to Dhankar and start our return back to Kaza.
