Undeniably one of the most offbeat treks in and around Himachal, Shepherd’s Trail takes you through the vast remoteness of the Kangra Valley, tucked away in the Western Himalayas. It is often used by the nomadic shepherd tribes, locally known as Gaddi, to cross over from Kullu to Kangra. A moderate trek, its trail crosses dense alpine forests, emerald green meadows, and picturesque villages. As you plan your next escape, here’s all you’ll need to know about the 2-day trek in Dharamkot.
Hop on a bus from Dharamkot to Salli, which is the starting point of the trek- just 2.5 hours away.
Upon reaching Salli, you’re in for a scenic 3-hour hike to Dhaledh, the base camp. The trail is full of meadows and gardens, with a river flowing beside it. So, just before you start on the adventure, gorge on a hearty lunch (on the house) to charge up.
Share a story or 2 with the shepherds as they prepare hot tea as a welcoming gesture (on the house). Sip and soak in all the tranquillity of shepherd huts and the river near the campsite.
Nothing better to end your day with than a freshly prepared dinner (on the house) by the bonfire. Laze around and relax after the meal as you stargaze through the night.
Wake up to the aroma of fresh breakfast to start your day right (on the house).
Off you go for an adventurous climb to Kareri Lake, which is an hour away. Sightseeing and stopping for amazing shots on the way is mandatory. :)
A scenic lunch by the Kareri Lake is just enough to unwind the tiredness after the climb (on the house).
As you make your way back to Dhaledh, nothing will relax you like a warm cuppa goat milk tea and endless shepherd stories to go with it(on the house).
Dinner is served as soon as you reach back to the campsite (on the house).
The final day starts with a scrumptious breakfast (on the house).
Head back to Salli after 2 days of wholehearted exploration. You'll also be stopping for a quick swim in the river flowing nearby!
After trekking back to Salli, get on a bus to Dharamkot and bid adieu to the wonderful shepherd guides.
