Known for numerous reasons Himachal Pradesh is famous for it’s aesthetic locations and many other things, including its beautiful landscapes, hill stations and beautiful temples.

However, if there is one place that stands out as one an offbeat destination is Bir. There are a number of things to do in Bir Billing and must have experiences that cannot be missed.

Bir is a small village located on the west of Joginder Nagar Valley in Himachal Pradesh. While it may be a small region contributing towards Himachal’s endless beauty, you will be surprised by how much it has to offer. Also known for it’s eco-tourism and spiritual studies.

ACTIVITIES TO DO IN BIR

1) Monastery Walks – Bir Billing is mostly inhabited by followers of Buddhism. You will discover many monasteries located in this village.

Out of the several, Chokling monastery is most definately worth a visit. Located in the Bir Tibetan Colony, it consists of a huge statue of Padmasambhava which will take your breath away. Another great place to visit is the Drugkpa Kagyu Monastery in Tashijong.

It was established by the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche and houses approximately 140 monks. Out of the many serene holy temples in Bir Billing is Sherab Ling Monastery. It is surrounded by beautiful forests and discovering a long – spanning philosophy is what you must expect at this place.

2) Hidden Waterfall - Follow the river upstream through the forest to the river pools and waterfalls above Upper Bir. Steeper than some of the other walks. The hike starts from Mahatma Kuttiyaan and one can reach after trekking 1 hr. Trek is easy to reach waterfall just follow the stream.

3) Mountain Biking - Mountain biking is best things to do in Bir Billing, easy to moderate trails in Bir Billing valley.

Mountain Biking from Paragliding landing area to Bhattu road to Bir to mahatama kuttita to Chougan chowk to Landing area – 8 km full trip and 2-3 hrs – (Easy to moderate). You can always customize your route.

4) A visit to Deer Park Institute - Deer park institute is located in the Kangra district of Bir. They offer different programs on meditation, philosophy, art and culture for all those who are interested. They even provide meditation retreats for those who do not have a lot of time to spend at Bir.

Deer Park was a monastery earlier, but now it is open to all.

5) Teachings At Dharmaya Institute - Another eco – institute that you can visit is the Dharmaya Institute. There are a number of environmental activities that you can enroll yourself into such as organic farming, green building and meditation among others to make productive use of your time in Bir. Many other events keep happening here.

6) Visit The Himalayan Film School - Are you a movie buff? Well, even if you aren’t we are sure you will appreciate the different and unique film festivals and movie making workshops that are conducted by the Himalayan Film School and qualifies as one of the must have experiences in Bir Billing.

7) Trek from Billing To Rajgundha – This trail is 12km long which takes you around 4-5 hrs to reach. Trail goes to uphill for first 15 minutes, to reach a proper wide trail. Trek is passing through dense Oak, Rhododendron and Deodar’s trees. There are so many endangered birds in the forest, so stay silent to spot some. Enjoy the nature at its fullest here.

After trekking to 2-3 hrs, you reach at the highest point of the trek at 2700 mts. at Channa ghat, where you have the view of two valleys. One side Kangra valley and other Raj-gundha valley with snow covered mountain range of Himalaya’s.

Visit Saptvadini temple and later resume trek to other side of valley to Raj-gundha village. Trek from here is downhill. Environment here is fresh and aroma of Deodara forests rejuvenate the body cells. After trekking of 1-2 hrs, you reach Raj gundha forest and Kukkar gundha villages.

8) Paragliding - Bir Billing is recognized as the paragliding hub of India. Since the time this particular adventure sports has come into existence especially in India, Bir Billing has fast become the prime attraction for adventure – seekers from all throughout the world for the same. There are a number of training programs that you can get in touch with for the said purpose.

9) Café Hopping – As we keep saying, food is one of the soul reasons we travel, And Bir has some of the most scenic cafés in India.

Silver Lining :  A cute laidback cafe built out of mud and stones  with an amazing view of the landing site. They have one of the best menues in town.

We have given out so many reasons to visit the beautiful Bir. Yet there can always be more. From shopping at Chauntra and Bir road , attending short courses at Dzongsar institute, strolling on the chowgan tea gardens and simply interacting and learning more about the locals and their culture.
