5 Festivals you should experience in Rajasthan

One Rajasthan…many festivals!

Marwar Festival – Jodhpur (October)

Dedicated to the medieval heroes of Rajasthan and held in the Blue City, this festival was originally known as the Maand festival. It celebrates the music and dance of the Marwar region, and through the tunes and the moves you will be transported back to an era of the nostalgic past. The venue and timing is an unbeatable combination, too – with the beautiful Mehrangarh fort and the impressive Umaid Bhavan Palace representing valour and the full moon shining down upon the city!

Shilpgram Festival – Udaipur (December)

The name literally translates to “Craftsmen’s Village”, this festival is to promote arts and crafts in Rajasthan. A melting pot of culture, you will be serenaded by folk artists singing and dancing while you feast your eyes and satiate that little artist within you as you try out hand-woven materials, embroidered with exquisite mirror work. Let’s not forget the wonderful terracotta work as well. And what about the venue? Nestled at the foot of the Aravali hills, this is one unbeatable event!

Jaipur Literature Festival – Jaipur (January)

Books and the pink city – is this the best combination ever or what? This awesome festival plays host to some of the most diverse group of people ever – authors from all over the world, legends and new kids on the block and a wonderful audience gather at the beautiful Diggi palace to pay an homage to literature. Oh, and did you know this is the largest free literary festival on earth? Yes, largest on the planet! There’s also readings, debates, live music, workshops and an experience of a lifetime!

Desert Festival – Jaisalmer (February)

The Golden City of Rajasthan outdoes itself as it raises a toast to the breathtaking desert. This festival can surprise you with a few unique things that it possesses, such as the longest mustache competition! Midst the tremendous dunes of the Thar Desert, this three-day celebration showcases folk songs and dances from Rajasthan, camel rides and dances, a turban tying competition and even a Mr. Desert pageant. A beauty contest in the desert – where else but Rajasthan would you see such an awesome thing?!

Elephant Festival – Jaipur (March)

Elephants have long been associated with royalty, and this festival celebrates them with great fervour. There’s a beautiful procession of elephants along with camels, the other famous animal from Rajasthan, and folk artistes. The magnificent animals are decked in fancy head gear, saddle cloths and other trinkets. The pachyderms also indulge in games such as elephant polo (and you thought that was only for horses and water) and even tug-of-war. Believe it or not – the best dressed elephant even gets a prize!

So, when do you come to Rajasthan to celebrate life? :)
